OpenAI has unveiled its integrated web search functionality for ChatGPT, marking a significant advancement in the artificial intelligence search landscape. The San Francisco-based organisation is implementing this feature gradually, with select paid users gaining initial access from Thursday.

The enhancement enables ChatGPT to deliver comprehensive responses by combining its existing capabilities with real-time online data, including sports results, news updates, weather forecasts, and stock market information. This strategic move positions OpenAI directly against industry giant Google, which recently expanded its AI Overviews feature powered by the Gemini AI model.

The competitive landscape is intensifying, with emerging player Perplexity gaining substantial traction. The two-year-old start-up, utilising models from both OpenAI and Anthropic, is reportedly in discussions to secure £1 billion in funding at an £8 billion valuation, marking its fourth capital raise this year.

To address the challenge of AI “hallucinations” – where models generate inaccurate information – OpenAI has implemented source citations and expanded context in its search responses. The development of this feature, initially launched as SearchGPT, benefited from collaborations with prominent publishers including the Financial Times, Axel Springer, and Condé Nast.

The technology sector’s search revolution continues to evolve, with Microsoft’s Bing making gradual progress in search advertising, whilst Meta develops its own AI search capabilities. OpenAI has indicated plans to enhance the feature’s functionality in retail and travel sectors, with voice integration on the horizon.

This development represents a crucial step in the evolution of AI-powered search tools, potentially reshaping how users interact with and retrieve information from the internet, whilst maintaining accuracy and credibility through verified source attribution.
