A federal court has granted permission for Orsted, the Danish renewable energy firm, to resume construction on its nearly finished Revolution Wind project off the coast of Rhode Island. This decision follows the Trump administration’s suspension of its lease for the project, citing national security concerns.

The injunction issued by the court allows the company to continue its construction efforts, which were halted last December after the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management raised concerns based on classified reports from the Department of War. The halt affected several offshore wind projects, including those by Equinor and Orsted.

As of now, Revolution Wind stands at a significant stage of completion, with 58 of its 65 turbines already installed and all foundations in place. The project is expected to generate 704 megawatts of power, which would be sufficient to supply over 350,000 homes. It had been projected to initiate power generation very soon.

Orsted, which is the world’s largest developer of offshore wind energy, expressed optimism regarding the future of the project. The company’s shares had seen a rise following the court’s ruling, reflecting investor confidence in the resolution of ongoing legal challenges.

This latest development highlights the complexities surrounding renewable energy initiatives in the United States, especially in light of policy shifts that can significantly impact project timelines. Legal disputes and regulatory hurdles continue to pose challenges for companies aiming to expand their renewable energy portfolios.

As the construction of Revolution Wind resumes, many industry stakeholders will be watching closely to assess the implications for future offshore wind projects in the region and beyond.
