The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America has appointed former United States Representative Eric Cantor as its next president and chief executive officer. The announcement was made on Tuesday, with Cantor set to assume the role on November 9. He will succeed Steve Ubl, who has led the industry’s primary lobbying group since 2015. Ubl will remain with the organisation as a strategic adviser until January 15. Cantor represented Virginia in the House of Representatives from 2000 to 2014, serving as the majority leader during the final three years of his tenure. The association noted that he played a significant part in developing the 21st Century Cures Act and advocated for legislation establishing Medicare Part D, the federal programme that covers certain prescription drugs.

In a separate regulatory development, Pierre Fabre Laboratories has resubmitted an approval request for Ebvallo, a cell therapy that United States regulators have previously rejected on two occasions. The treatment, originally developed by partner Atara Biotherapeutics, has been available in Europe since late 2022 for a severe complication of Epstein-Barr virus infections. The Food and Drug Administration initially declined the application in 2025 citing manufacturing concerns and rejected it again in January. Atara subsequently alleged that the agency had reversed a prior agreement. Pierre Fabre has now reached an agreement with the FDA for a new application based on updated data from a single-arm trial, expanded access programmes, and commercial use in Europe.

Mirum Pharmaceuticals reported that an experimental drug acquired last year has shown positive results in the first of two Phase 3 trials for chronic hepatitis D. The company stated that brelovitug, administered as a once-weekly low dose or once-monthly high dose, significantly suppressed hepatitis D virus levels in 56% and 45% of recipients respectively after 24 weeks. Participants in a third arm with delayed treatment did not achieve this outcome. Mirum obtained the drug through a $620 million acquisition of Bluejay Therapeutics. A regulatory filing may follow if a second late-stage trial, with results expected later this year, is also successful.

Mirum also announced on Friday that the FDA approved zilurgisertib for fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, an ultra-rare bone disease. Incyte had completed pivotal testing before licensing the drug to Mirum in May for a $16 million upfront payment. The approval allows the medicine, to be marketed as Atebrioz, to be used by adults and children aged 12 and older. It will compete with treatments from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Ipsen.

Additionally, the FDA approved Juvmo, a new AbbVie medication for Parkinson’s disease, on Monday. Formerly known as tavapadon, the drug was acquired by AbbVie in a nearly $9 billion buyout of Cerevel Therapeutics in 2023. The approval follows successful testing shortly after the deal was announced, helping AbbVie recover value from a transaction partially written off due to other study failures. Juvmo is described as a first-of-its-kind medicine that targets two distinct dopamine receptors. In trials, it helped control symptoms and reduced the duration of periods when the effects of other medications ceased.
