Pakistan International Airlines is preparing to resume direct flights to Britain for the first time in over five years, following the lifting of a ban imposed after a scandal surrounding fraudulent pilot licences. The initial Islamabad to Manchester service is set to take off on Saturday, signalling a potential expansion to up to six British cities as demand resumes within the large UK Pakistani diaspora.

The ban dates back to 2020, following a tragic PIA crash in Karachi that claimed 97 lives. In the aftermath, an inquiry revealed that nearly a third of Pakistani pilots possessed licences obtained through irregular means, with examinations often sat by proxies. This prompted British, European, and American aviation authorities to suspend Pakistan’s national carrier from their airspace until regulatory and safety standards were comprehensively addressed.

Comprehensive reforms have now been implemented. High Commissioner Mohammad Faisal has confirmed that the pilot certification process has undergone a rigorous overhaul, featuring oversight by external examiners and close vetting that has convinced UK and European regulators. Maintenance and safety management have also been tightened, with flight crew undergoing retraining and certification processes in the United Kingdom.

PIA aims to reestablish itself as a leading player in the UK South Asian aviation market. Flights from Islamabad to Birmingham are scheduled within a month, with London Heathrow to follow in early 2026. Services from Karachi and Lahore are on the agenda, and there are strategic plans to link with Glasgow and Cardiff, the latter serving significant Pakistani British communities. Privately owned competitors such as Airblue and AirSial may soon follow, with potential routes to Leeds Bradford under consideration.

The resumption of direct flights is expected to provide a major boost for the two million British Pakistanis and an estimated 40,000 students, who collectively make around 300,000 round trips between both countries annually. The restoration of direct routes will reduce reliance on stopovers in Gulf states and is set to increase freight flows, particularly for perishable goods, supporting ongoing trade negotiations.

PIA’s renewed access to the British market arrives at a critical juncture as the airline prepares for privatisation after returning to profit for the first time in two decades. Historically a juggernaut in Asian aviation, PIA is seeking to rebuild its fortunes and reputation, leveraging renewed regulatory trust and optimised operational standards. The return to British skies marks a significant milestone in its revival and in strengthening economic ties between Britain and Pakistan.
