Poolbeg Pharma PLC has received a Notice of Allowance from the Israeli Patent Office for its POLB 001 cancer immunotherapy-induced cytokine release syndrome patent application. The clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company is developing POLB 001 as a potentially preventative oral therapy targeting a serious immune reaction triggered by certain cancer treatments.

Cytokine release syndrome represents a significant and potentially life-threatening complication arising from specific cancer therapies. The Israeli decision adds to the company’s expanding intellectual property portfolio, following a grant decision in Europe and formal grants in both Australia and Canada.

The patent application encompasses the use of p38 MAPK inhibitors, including POLB 001, to prevent cancer immunotherapy-induced cytokine release syndrome. This protection is supported by the company’s proprietary research data. Having successfully passed examination, the application is anticipated to progress to full grant status in the near future.

The board emphasised that the expanding patent estate enhances the strategic and commercial attractiveness of POLB 001 to potential partners as the drug advances through clinical development stages. Chief executive Jeremy Skillington highlighted the importance of continued progress in the company’s global intellectual property strategy, describing the Israeli allowance as a significant milestone in securing comprehensive patent protection.

Skillington noted that the approval reflects the robustness of the company’s scientific approach. The growing intellectual property protection is expected to strengthen the drug’s competitive position as it progresses through the development pipeline.

Poolbeg Pharma’s shares trade on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker POLB. The company remains focused on advancing its portfolio within the cancer immunotherapy field, with POLB 001 representing its lead asset in development.
