Robert Jenrick, the Treasury spokesman for Reform UK, has requested meetings with major institutional holders of UK government debt. The move follows a recent surge in borrowing costs that has raised concerns regarding the stability of the nation’s public finances. Jenrick announced at the Reform conference that he had written to significant market participants to outline the party’s strategy for reducing borrowing and enforcing discipline across the public sector.

The letter, which was sent to major City institutions including Citi and JP Morgan, emphasises the need for the next government to control borrowing and tame inflation. Jenrick stated that such measures would help lower interest rates and stimulate economic activity. He argued that achieving this outcome requires a combination of fiscal discipline, supply-side reform, and a commitment to the institutions that investors rely upon. The Reform leader also indicated that any tax cuts would be implemented in a sensible and measured manner to support growth.

Market reactions have been mixed, with medium-term gilt yields dropping slightly on Thursday after reaching near two-decade highs. Analysts suggest that at least six billion pounds would be cut from the current fiscal headroom. At the conference, Jenrick proposed that a Reform government would be prepared to reduce public expenditure by eighty billion pounds, primarily through welfare reforms. He claimed that this fiscal tightening could save the government approximately thirty billion pounds annually in debt interest payments, despite projections that the UK will spend over one hundred and ten billion pounds on servicing debt this year.

However, tax experts have warned that the recent rise in borrowing costs could pressure the Chancellor to increase taxes. Elisa Sofocli, a partner at Blick Rothenberg, cautioned that while tax may appear to be the easiest lever to pull, repeatedly increasing taxes or adding complexity could drag down economic activity. She noted that if the UK becomes more expensive and complicated without delivering greater certainty, business decisions may be made elsewhere. One City source also indicated that the financial services sector faces significant risks regarding potential tax hikes.
