London-based Revolut has secured a comprehensive banking licence from French authorities following a joint evaluation conducted by the ACPR and the European Central Bank. This regulatory approval enables the fintech firm to commence operations as a fully licensed bank within the country, marking a significant milestone in its regional expansion strategy.

The newly established entity, Revolut Bank S.A., will initially serve customers based in France before gradually extending services to other Western European markets including Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The company has previously confirmed plans for a new headquarters in Paris scheduled to open by 2027. Nik Storonsky, the founder and chief executive officer, stated that this licence provides the necessary foundation to develop next-generation banking solutions for over thirty million customers across Western Europe.

Storonsky described France as an ideal platform due to its status as a leading financial hub supported by a dynamic ecosystem and robust regulatory framework. This development aligns with Revolut’s ambition to become one of Europe’s largest and most trusted banks while maintaining operational stability through its existing Lithuanian entity, which continues to serve the wider European Economic Area under a dual-hub model.

This French approval follows similar recent developments in other jurisdictions where the company has obtained full banking status. Just last month, Revolut received authorisation from Australian regulators to operate as an authorised deposit-taking institution, further demonstrating its global growth trajectory within the financial services sector.
