The device, appropriately named AlterEgo, is billed as the world’s first near-telepathic wearable and is worn around the ears in the style of a hearing aid.\n\nAlterEgo uses bone conduction technology to interpret minuscule movements of the mouth, face and vocal cord muscles—signals referred to as “silent speech.” These silent articulations are then interpreted by bespoke software and converted into words, enabling users to silently express thoughts at the speed they naturally arise.\n\nThe MIT team claims that this technological leap could provide a lifeline for those suffering from speech-impairing conditions such as multiple sclerosis, allowing them to communicate clearly and efficiently. For other consumers, AlterEgo opens the door to seamless, wordless communication between users, as well as discreet access to AI assistants or search engines without ever needing to reach for a smartphone.\n\nArnav Kapur, the computer scientist steering the project, describes AlterEgo as a “revolutionary breakthrough” in how we communicate, positioning it as an intuitive extension of the human mind itself. He asserts that the device offers “the power of telepathy, but only for the thoughts you wish to share,” firmly distinguishing it from conventional forms of communication limited by the speed of typing or swiping.\n\nThe technology stands apart from invasive neural interfaces such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which involves surgically implanting chips into the brain to read and interpret thoughts as signals. By contrast, AlterEgo does not read your mind in the traditional sense. Instead, it captures the signals transmitted to the mouth and vocal cords as you silently, deliberately express words—only detecting thoughts you actively wish to communicate.\n\nMIT’s research team reports that the silent speech detection accuracy of AlterEgo currently sits at 90 percent, though the system requires adaptation and training for optimal performance with each individual. Originating as an MIT research initiative in 2018, AlterEgo has now spun out into a for-profit start-up intent on refining the technology for broad and accessible use."}
