SLB has been appointed as the strategic reservoir partner for Harbour Energy’s Havstjerne carbon storage project in Norway. The services company, formerly known as Schlumberger, announced the agreement during its attendance at the ONS conference in Stavanger. Under the new arrangement, SLB will deliver technology and engineering services to support the concept and front-end engineering and design phases of the initiative.

The project is being developed by Harbour Energy in partnership with Stella Maris CCS, an entity owned by Yinson Production. SLB will provide plans for monitoring stored carbon dioxide as the partners work to establish the technical, cost and schedule basis required ahead of a final investment decision. Gavin Rennick, president of SLB’s new energy and industrial business, stated that carbon storage projects are transitioning from individual technical studies toward integrated development models that connect the subsurface, wells and offshore infrastructure. He added that Havstjerne demonstrates how SLB can combine its technology, engineering and project integration capabilities to help customers develop the technical basis needed to advance large-scale carbon storage projects.

Mark van Aerssen, project manager for Havstjerne, said the initiative is being matured to provide cost-effective, large-scale offshore carbon dioxide storage for European industrial emitters. He noted that the integrated approach will help further define the project’s technical, cost and schedule basis while strengthening coordination across critical interfaces. The site is located 135 kilometres south-west of Stavanger, where emissions will be stored between 2,250 and 3,300 metres below sea level. Lars Gunnar Vogt, chief technical officer of Yinson Production, said the project demonstrates how collaboration across the value chain can help advance carbon storage solutions. Harbour Energy also operates the Humber-based Viking CCS project and is a partner in the Acorn CCS project in Peterhead, Scotland.
