The chief executive of Sofitel and its sister brands, Maud Bailly, brings an unexpected dynamism to luxury hospitality, shaped by her diverse career path through French public service and railway management.

Leading nearly 250 hotels across the Sofitel, MGallery, and Emblems portfolio, Bailly’s leadership style reflects her unique journey from modest beginnings to the pinnacle of French luxury hospitality. As part of the €12 billion Accor group, she oversees the brands that embody French ‘art de vivre’ across 60 countries.

Her educational trajectory through France’s prestigious grande école system, including the École Nationale d’Administration, positioned her alongside notable alumni such as Emmanuel Macron. Rather than following the conventional path to corporate leadership, Bailly chose to gain hands-on operational experience at SNCF, France’s state railway operator.

The railway experience proved transformative, with Bailly mastering everything from train operations to station management at Paris Montparnasse. Her innovative approach included installing the first station piano, spawning a global trend that later inspired Channel 4’s popular show ‘The Piano’.

Brexit remains a significant concern for Bailly, who worked on contingency planning during her time in the French government. She advocates for stronger European integration, playfully suggesting a “Brex-in” movement to reunite Britain with the EU.

Under her leadership, Sofitel is experiencing substantial growth, with 90 new properties planned by 2028. Bailly’s commitment to increasing female leadership in luxury hospitality remains steadfast, despite facing resistance from some property owners. Her success in achieving 43% female general managers in Accor’s southern European division stands as a testament to her dedication to gender equality in hospitality leadership.
