The Spanish government is preparing to introduce a nationwide public transport pass that will allow unlimited travel across the country by train or bus for a flat monthly fee of sixty euros. Announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the new initiative is expected to come into effect during the second half of January. The policy represents a significant expansion of affordable public transport access, with the aim of changing how Spaniards utilise these vital services.
The scheme will offer an even lower rate of thirty euros per month for individuals under the age of twenty six. All passengers will be able to travel on middle distance and suburban trains, as well as on national bus routes. According to the government, the measure could reduce monthly travel expenses for some workers by as much as sixty percent.
Officials project that around two million citizens will benefit directly from the lowered costs, whether commuting to work, returning home, or carrying out daily activities. The government positions this policy as evidence of its commitment to improving living standards and facilitating daily life for ordinary people.
The new transport pass closely resembles Germany’s earlier initiative, which introduced a forty nine Euro monthly ticket in two thousand and twenty three for regional travel. This model has already proved popular in its original context, stimulating higher use of public transport.
The announcement arrives as Prime Minister Sánchez’s minority administration contends with allegations of corruption and sexual harassment against figures within his party and government. Sánchez maintains that his government consistently addresses such allegations with decisive action and underscores its commitment to feminist principles and the elimination of abuse.
Political opposition has grown more vocal, with some parties and religious leaders demanding a snap general election in light of recent scandals. The government asserts its intention to serve out the full legislative term, reaffirming its focus on economic growth and policies aimed at supporting the wider population
