Recent research suggests that daily multivitamin supplementation could potentially reduce biological ageing in older adults. The findings, published in the journal Nature Medicine, indicate that taking a multivitamin pill over a two-year period may result in a decreased biological age compared to individuals who did not take any supplements.

The study involved 958 healthy participants with an average age of 70. Participants were randomly assigned to four groups, including one that took a daily cocoa extract alongside a multivitamin, and another group that received two placebos. Blood samples were analysed to measure DNA methylation patterns, with specific markers of ageing being the focus.

Those who took multivitamin pills exhibited a biological age approximately four months younger than their counterparts who received no supplements. Two of the five ageing markers showed statistically significant signs of slowing biological ageing among multivitamin users. The greatest benefits were noted in individuals whose biological age exceeded their chronological age, indicating that supplements might help realign these two metrics.

Medical professionals have greeted the findings with cautious optimism. Experts have pointed out that while the multivitamin effect appears beneficial, it is essential to consider the broader context of ageing. Other factors such as DNA damage, protein changes, and cellular communication issues also play crucial roles in the ageing process.

While multivitamins may not be essential for those with a well-balanced diet, many adults in the UK fail to achieve optimal nutritional intake. Therefore, supplementation could provide valuable support for this demographic, especially as the research indicates a modest reduction in biological ageing linked to multivitamin use.

Overall, the study illuminates the potential for dietary supplements to influence health outcomes in older populations, though further research is required to contextualise these results and understand the long-term implications.
