Rivian intends to expand beyond its current role as an electric vehicle manufacturer, aiming to become a technology supplier by the end of the decade. CEO RJ Scaringe indicated that the company is developing a strategy to license its electric architecture, software, and artificial intelligence models to external partners. This shift reflects a broader ambition to diversify revenue streams while maintaining its core automotive operations.

The company has increased its vertical integration over the past year, developing proprietary AI models for its in-vehicle assistant and constructing an end-to-end automated driving stack. This autonomous technology is being developed for passenger vehicles and future robotaxis in partnership with Uber. Rivian is also developing custom silicon, specifically a five-nanometre processor, in collaboration with Arm and TSMC. Additionally, the automaker is engaged in a $5.8 billion joint technology venture with the Volkswagen Group, which focuses on electric architecture and software. Scaringe stated that the company aims to expand this joint venture to cover AI and autonomy, and to license its technology to multiple other brands.

Scaringe’s entrepreneurial activities extend beyond Rivian, with direct links to the automaker’s future ecosystem. He established a micromobility programme that has spun out into a startup named Also. He also founded Mind Robotics, an industrial robotics company that is now 31 per cent owned by Rivian, with the automaker listed as a prospective customer. During a recent interview, Scaringe announced that Doug Field, a former executive at Ford, Apple, and Tesla, has been hired as president of Mind Robotics. The robotics startup is developing industrial robots for use in Rivian factories and for sale to other companies.

Scaringe expressed enthusiasm for the potential of autonomy to reshape vehicle design. He suggested that the development of autonomous technology could lead to new form factors for personally owned vehicles, creating dramatically different user experiences. He described the next decade in transportation as exciting due to the design opportunities enabled by these advancements. The company is positioning itself to leverage these technologies across multiple business lines, including its robotaxi operations and industrial robotics ventures.

Other developments in the transportation sector include Bedrock Robotics, a startup developing autonomous driving technology for construction vehicles, which is reportedly raising $600 million. Dot Ai completed the acquisition of Envoy Technologies, an electric vehicle car-sharing business, in a $65 million all-stock transaction. Evos, which develops AI agents for industrial businesses, raised $9 million in a pre-seed round. Mana Battery, a Colorado-based startup developing anode-free sodium batteries, secured $10.15 million in funding led by Voyager Ventures.

PlusAI, an autonomous trucking developer, filed a Form S-4 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, advancing its plan to go public via a merger with a blank-check company. Volvo is expanding its partnership with Nvidia to enhance its automated driving system, planning to use Nvidia products to offer hands-free driving on highways and surface streets. Waabi, a self-driving truck developer, has entered a commercial partnership with Warrior Logistics to move freight between Dallas and Houston. Waymo has received approval to participate in an automated vehicle pilot program in Toronto and has opened its robotaxi service to the general public in San Antonio, San Diego, and Tampa.
