Tesla halts cybertruck sales amidst concerns over build quality and buyer backlash

Elon Musk’s Tesla has been forced to suspend sales of its all-electric Cybertruck amidst growing scrutiny over build quality issues. Reports have surfaced from owners and enthusiasts about metal panels detaching from the vehicle, leading to widespread criticism of its supposed “indestructible” design.

Customers on online forums and platforms like Cybertruck Owners Club and Musk’s own X (formerly Twitter) revealed that deliveries have been paused. A report from Electrek highlighted recurring issues, including trim and panels dislodging during use. A particularly problematic area is the cantrail, a decorative trim on the roof, which has reportedly exhibited detachment in multiple cases.

The Cybertruck’s unconventional stainless steel exoskeleton was marketed as revolutionary, offering greater durability and resistance to chips. However, Tesla’s approach to attaching separate visible panels rather than using an integrated body has caused concern. Social media platforms are now filled with videos of Cybertruck panels flying off, further fuelling apprehensions.

Cold weather appears to exacerbate these problems, as owners report adhesive failures in low temperatures. Tesla has issued several recalls addressing these issues, including one for a panel glued to the vehicle’s body. Other recalls have dealt with software malfunctions and a design issue where the accelerator pedal risks becoming stuck within the internal trim, amplifying safety concerns.

While the Cybertruck’s polarising wedge-shaped, minimalist design drew initial interest, Tesla’s production has been plagued by dwindling sales. It is reported that Tesla has resorted to offering price discounts and remarketing high-end “Founders Series” models as standard versions to move unsold stock. Controversies surrounding Elon Musk’s political involvement, including his ties to Donald Trump, have added to the backlash, harming sentiment around the brand.

On top of this, Tesla’s share price has suffered, with disruptions in Cybertruck sales amplifying market tensions. In Europe, the vehicle faces further limitations due to safety regulation non-compliance. The Cybertruck’s weight and angular structure fall short of the pedestrian safety benchmarks, excluding it from UK roads entirely.

With mounting criticisms over product quality and a challenging sales environment, Tesla faces a turbulent road ahead as it seeks to restore its once-unshaken dominance in the electric vehicle market.
