TikTok has begun restoring its services after President-elect Donald Trump pledged to shield companies distributing and hosting the platform from potential legal consequences stemming from a US ban that took effect on Sunday. The Chinese-owned video platform expressed gratitude towards Trump for providing essential clarity to service providers regarding penalty exemptions.
The social media giant’s web version resumed operations in the US by Sunday afternoon, with the mobile application following suit hours later. Republican opposition to any deadline extension has emerged, with prominent figures like Senator Tom Cotton warning of “ruinous liability” for companies facilitating the “communist-controlled” platform. Legal experts note the absence of extension provisions in the law once the January 19 deadline passes.
The situation has attracted significant attention following Trump’s recent communication with Chinese President Xi Jinping, though Chinese officials did not acknowledge discussions about TikTok in their official statement.
