In a significant development for the US technology sector, OpenAI and SoftBank have unveiled plans for a massive artificial intelligence infrastructure project, receiving enthusiastic support from Donald Trump. The joint venture, named Stargate, represents an initial investment of $100 billion, with potential expansion to $500 billion over four years.

The ambitious project was announced at the White House, where Trump stood alongside SoftBank chairman Masayoshi Son, OpenAI chief Sam Altman, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. The president characterised the venture as a “declaration of confidence in America,” emphasising its potential to create 100,000 immediate jobs.

Under the partnership structure, SoftBank will maintain ultimate financial responsibility while OpenAI takes charge of operations. The venture has secured additional backing from Abu Dhabi’s AI-focused state fund MGX and Oracle, with technology partnerships from SoftBank-owned Arm, Microsoft, and Nvidia.

The immediate focus centres on constructing a data centre in Abilene, Texas, with construction already underway. This development arrives at a crucial time, as the rapid evolution of AI systems has stretched American infrastructure to its limits, particularly in data centre capacity.

Microsoft has simultaneously announced modifications to its OpenAI partnership, allowing the AI company to utilise competing cloud-computing services. This strategic shift maintains Microsoft’s right of first refusal while opening new possibilities for infrastructure development.

The timing of this announcement aligns with Trump’s inaugural promise of a “thrilling new era of national success.” SoftBank’s Son expressed particular enthusiasm, stating this marks “the beginning of a golden age,” whilst noting the investment’s dependence on Trump’s re-election.
