UK Electric Vehicle Adoption Faces Critical Slowdown Due to Charging Infrastructure Inequality

Growing disparities in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the UK are threatening to derrapeur the nation’s transition to sustainable transport, according to a comprehensive analysis by consultancy firm Stonehaven.

The research highlights a significant divergence between affluent and economically disadvantaged regions, with charging point availability becoming a postcode lottery. A stark example emerges from London, where Westminster boasts nearly 2,700 charging points whilst neighbouring Harrow maintains a mere 63 points, illustrating the inconsistent approach to infrastructure deployment.

Financial implications of public versus private charging present additional barriers to widespread adoption. Public charging costs between 50p-75p/kWh, substantially higher than domestic rates of 7p/kWh available through specialised night-time tariffs. This price differential creates a notable economic advantage for property owners with private driveways, whilst penalising those reliant on public infrastructure.

The disparity extends beyond mere availability. VAT implications further compound the issue, with public charging attracting 20% VAT compared to 5% for home charging. This taxation framework inadvertently favours higher-income households with private parking facilities.

Despite governmental subsidies driving initial adoption rates, with the Office for Budget Responsibility repeatedly raising usage forecasts between 2019 and 2021, the momentum appears to be waning. The report suggests this slowdown stems from inadequate infrastructure planning rather than technological limitations.

The Department for Transport reports a 40% increase in public charging points over the past year, totalling 72,000 nationwide. However, industry experts argue this growth remains insufficient to support mass market transition, particularly in economically challenged regions where the benefits of EV adoption could prove most impactful.
