The British government is preparing to greenlight significant expansion plans at Gatwick Airport, the nation’s second-largest aviation hub, as part of a broader strategy to boost economic growth. The £2.2bn development project would enable Gatwick to increase its passenger capacity to 75 million annually by the late 2030s, up from 46.5 million in 2019.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander faces a crucial deadline of 27 February to decide on Gatwick’s proposal to convert its standby runway for regular use. Government sources indicate the approval is virtually guaranteed, citing substantial economic benefits and manageable environmental impacts.
Luton Airport’s ambitious expansion plans are also under ministerial review, with a decision required by 3 April. The proposal aims to raise passenger numbers from 18 million to 32 million annually. While approval appears likely, officials are working to address noise pollution concerns affecting the Chiltern Hills, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty.
Labour’s shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to reaffirm support for Heathrow’s controversial third runway project in an upcoming economic growth speech. However, this stance contradicts positions held by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who oppose airport expansion due to environmental concerns.
The expansion initiatives form part of a larger infrastructure drive, including the £9bn Lower Thames Crossing project. These developments align with the government’s economic growth agenda, though they must demonstrate compliance with existing environmental obligations.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has criticised the focus on southern airport expansion, arguing it perpetuates regional economic imbalances. He advocates for improved high-speed rail connections to Manchester Airport, which currently operates below capacity and offers potential for growth without requiring major infrastructure changes.
