Wind power is now neck-and-neck with gas as the largest single source of power generation, with both hovering around 30 per cent of total output.\n\nEmber’s senior climate analyst, Frankie Mayo, highlights this achievement as clear evidence of the UK’s progress in renewable energy adoption. The closure of coal-fired power stations and substantial investments in wind turbines and solar panels have driven this transformation.\n\nThe government’s ambitious target of achieving an almost entirely clean power system by 2030 faces significant challenges. Labour’s recent adjustment to target 95 per cent clean power by 2030, rather than complete decarbonisation, reflects the complex reality of maintaining grid stability.\n\nNuclear power contributes approximately 15 per cent of the generation mix, while coal’s contribution has dwindled to a mere 0.9 per cent. The UK’s position as the first G7 nation to phase out coal-fired power plants demonstrates its commitment to environmental leadership.\n\nIndustry experts, including LCP Delta’s head of energy economics Sam Hollister, maintain that while the 2030 targets are technically achievable, they require unprecedented coordination between government, industry, regulators, and investors.
