# UK Renewable Energy Set to Surpass Fossil Fuels in Historic Power Shift

Renewable energy is poised to dominate the UK’s electricity generation landscape this year, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s transition towards cleaner power sources. According to research from think-tank Ember, wind, solar, and hydropower will collectively generate approximately 37 per cent of the country’s electricity, surpassing fossil fuels at 35 per cent.

The shift represents a remarkable transformation from a decade ago when gas and coal dominated the energy mix, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of generation. Wind power is now neck-and-neck with gas as the largest single source of power generation, with both hovering around 30 per cent of total output.

Ember’s senior climate analyst, Frankie Mayo, highlights this achievement as clear evidence of the UK’s progress in renewable energy adoption. The closure of coal-fired power stations and substantial investments in wind turbines and solar panels have driven this transformation.

The government’s ambitious target of achieving an almost entirely clean power system by 2030 faces significant challenges. Labour’s recent adjustment to target 95 per cent clean power by 2030, rather than complete decarbonisation, reflects the complex reality of maintaining grid stability.

Nuclear power contributes approximately 15 per cent of the generation mix, while coal’s contribution has dwindled to a mere 0.9 per cent. The UK’s position as the first G7 nation to phase out coal-fired power plants demonstrates its commitment to environmental leadership.

Industry experts, including LCP Delta’s head of energy economics Sam Hollister, maintain that while the 2030 targets are technically achievable, they require unprecedented coordination between government, industry, regulators, and investors. The challenge extends beyond 2030, as the UK strives to meet its legally binding target of complete economy-wide decarbonisation by 2050.
