# Welsh Government approves first major offshore wind project

The Welsh Government has granted approval for its inaugural significant offshore wind initiative, known as the Llŷr Wind Farm, situated off the coast of Pembrokeshire. This development marks a pivotal moment in regional energy infrastructure planning.

Located approximately 35km from shore, the initial phase involves up to ten turbine generators standing roughly 300 metres tall with an individual capacity of 100 MW each. A subsequent stage designated as Llŷr 2 will evaluate alternative offshore wind platform technologies using a further ten platforms, maintaining similar power output specifications.

The project developer Cierco Energy is advancing this test and demonstration floating wind scheme within the Celtic Sea following receipt of a Section 36 consent order from Welsh ministers. This authorisation serves as primary clearance for major energy infrastructure undertakings in Wales. Officials estimate that construction activities could generate around 2,000 employment positions, though figures regarding permanent roles remain undetermined.

Adam Price, cabinet minister responsible for enterprise and energy within Plaid Cymru, described such initiatives as catalysts for economic prosperity. He emphasised commitments to secure high-quality local jobs while boosting regional productivity. Previous regulatory milestones include a Marine Licence issued by Natural Resources Wales in June and seabed rights secured the following month through an agreement with The Crown Estate.

Earlier strategic partnerships involving Marine Power Systems aim to deploy specific platform technologies at designated sites. Scott Harper, chief executive of Cierco Energy, noted that this venture positions South West Wales as a global centre for offshore wind innovation and clean energy expertise. He highlighted opportunities extending to local businesses, ports and universities essential for future large-scale deployments.

Infrastructure requirements encompass two export cable circuits spanning approximately 30 miles connecting to the grid at Pembroke Power Station via horizontal directional drilling near Freshwater West. Commercial power generation is anticipated by 2031 as part of Wales transition toward renewable energy sources.
