The decision was reported by The Globe and Mail, which cited unnamed sources. The London-based unit was separated from its parent company in 2023 to prepare for a future public offering, operating with distinct management and investor relations teams. CEO Shaun Usmar stated in March that the business was being prepared for a potential listing by midyear, although the report indicates the transaction could still be revived at a later date.\n\nVale shares declined by 0.4 per cent to $15.26 in New York near the close on Friday, valuing the company at $64.4 billion. The subsidiary holds the group’s global portfolio of copper, nickel and cobalt operations across Canada, Brazil, Japan, Britain and Indonesia. Vale acquired its Canadian nickel assets through the 2006 takeover of Inco Ltd. In February, the unit agreed to sell most of its stake in a Canadian nickel venture as the parent company focuses on doubling copper production over the next decade.\n\nThis strategic shift aligns with market trends where copper has outperformed nickel. Copper prices have risen by approximately 45 per cent over the past year, a gain roughly four times that of nickel. By placing the initial public offering on hold, Vale retains its base metals portfolio intact while pursuing copper expansion. The move also preserves the option to return to public markets with the unit in the future."}
