VirginMedia O2 is currently in advanced discussions regarding a significant commercial broadband agreement with VodafoneThree. This initiative aims to bolster VirginMedia O2’s position as a contender to BT’s Openreach. As Britain’s second largest broadband network, VirginMedia O2 has recently lost customers amid the influx of new competitors within the market.
A wholesale partnership would enable VodafoneThree, which lacks its own broadband infrastructure within the UK, to utilise VirginMedia O2’s existing network. The telecom companies are striving to recover the substantial investments made to expand broadband services nationwide by increasing the number of users on their networks. Reports from Enders Analysis indicate that the penetration rate for VirginMedia O2 stands at approximately 30 percent.
The potential agreement with VodafoneThree is believed to be linked to VirginMedia O2’s progress in finalising its £2 billion acquisition of Netomnia, the UK’s second largest alternative network. Upon completion, this acquisition is expected to enhance the fibre footprint, reaching up to eight million households by the end of the following year. When combined with VirginMedia O2’s current network, the reach may extend to approximately 20 million premises and cater to around 6.2 million customers.
This development could intensify competition against Openreach, which serves about 30 million homes, with over 21 million upgraded to high-speed fibre. VirginMedia O2 has been making substantial investments to transition its network from legacy cable to full-fibre technology. Industry analysts suggest that proving its capability as a reliable wholesale network could potentially facilitate regulatory approval for the Netomnia acquisition.
VodafoneThree, which recently completed a £16.5 billion merger, is eager to expand its user base, having reported around 2 million broadband customers as of December. The company aims to more than double this figure by the year 2034. While VirginMedia O2 has opted not to comment on the negotiations, VodafoneThree has indicated its ongoing exploration of opportunities to enhance connectivity for its customers.
