Volkswagen Launches Electric Vehicle Initiative in China with New Model

Volkswagen has commenced mass production of its first model developed in collaboration with the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng. The German automotive giant is focusing on a resurgence in the Chinese market, with more than 20 new models expected to launch this year in an effort to compete with domestic rivals such as BYD and Geely.

The ID UNYX 08 electric SUV, poised to hit the market in the first half of this year, signifies Volkswagen’s revitalised strategy in the world’s largest automotive market. The company is prioritising local development and faster turnaround times. Volkswagen has reported that its new China-based operations enable vehicle development to be completed 30 per cent faster compared to previous methods, with the ID UNYX 08 brought to production within 24 months.

Ralf Brandstätter, a board member at Volkswagen Group for China, stated that the company’s approach of ‘in China, for China’ is yielding results. The launch of the ID UNYX 08 is central to Volkswagen’s most extensive electric vehicle offensive in China to date.

As the largest car manufacturer in Europe, Volkswagen faces a challenging year ahead, marked by tariffs and the struggle to regain traction in its primary market. The company has lost considerable ground to local competitors who have been more agile in rolling out software-rich, lower-cost electric vehicles. Last year, Volkswagen was surpassed by Geely Auto in sales, falling to third place after losing its longstanding dominance to BYD in 2024.

Including both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles slated for release this year, Volkswagen aims to introduce a total of 50 new energy vehicles in China by 2030. The ID UNYX 08 emerged from a technology partnership established in 2023 with Xpeng, which supplies autonomous driving systems and the Turing AI chips featured in the new vehicle. A second jointly developed electric vehicle with Xpeng is anticipated to be unveiled later this year.

Both models will be manufactured at Volkswagen’s Hefei plant, situated west of Shanghai, which has an annual production capacity of 350,000 units and also produces the Cupra Tavascan SUV for export to Europe.
