Wayve Attracts Major Investment Valued at $8.6 Billion Dollars

The British Business Bank has announced its investment in driverless car company Wayve as part of a fundraising round that values the company at 8.6 billion dollars. This noteworthy investment reflects a growing interest in the artificial intelligence sector and positions the UK prominently within this rapidly evolving market.

Founded in 2017 by two machine-learning PhD students from Cambridge, Wayve has quickly emerged as a leader in the race to develop robotaxis. The recent funding round, which amounted to 1.5 billion dollars, was led by Softbank and saw backing from prominent US tech companies including Microsoft, Nvidia, and Uber, as well as major car manufacturers such as Nissan, Stellantis, and Mercedes-Benz.

Leandros Kalisperas, the chief investment officer at the British Business Bank, indicated that this investment marks a significant step for the UK in the realm of autonomous vehicle technology. The bank participated with a direct investment of 25 million pounds, which represents its joint largest investment to date.

Kalisperas explained that the government aims to stimulate domestic investment to enable UK firms to grow and scale without the threat of being acquired or relocating overseas. The aims of this initiative directly align with the recent commitment of 6.6 billion pounds in capital to the British Business Bank, enhancing its investment capacity to over 25 billion pounds.

Wayve’s technology is advancing from the phase of technology risk to scale-up risk, highlighting the need for further commercialisation support. Kalisperas noted the importance of developing a robust domestic capital ecosystem to help companies like Wayve secure additional funding.

As the interest in driverless car technology continues to intensify, the implications for urban transport and technology ecosystems in the UK could be profound. This investment not only strengthens the position of Wayve but also signals a growing confidence in the UK’s capabilities in the artificial intelligence sector.
