DoorDash has agreed to pay a $131.5m settlement to New York City regulators after admitting it failed to compensate thousands of workers correctly or on time. The food delivery company acknowledged its errors in a statement, noting that its mistakes resulted in some drivers being underpaid or paid late. This resolution follows a city investigation into wage violations and represents a significant financial commitment to address past non-compliance with local labour standards.

The bulk of the payout, amounting to $83m, resolves a disagreement over how compensation is calculated for time workers spend online between deliveries. New York rules require pay for all time logged into the app, whereas industry norms traditionally limited payment to active deliveries. DoorDash attributed the discrepancies to complex minimum wage changes introduced in New York state in 2023, which vary by county and employer size. The company also cited technical glitches and multi-stop delivery routes as factors that contributed to delayed or incorrect wage payments.

This settlement continues a broader pattern of conflict between gig economy platforms and municipal authorities. Rivals such as Uber Eats and Grubhub have faced similar clashes over tipping laws, minimum wages and data-sharing requirements. While DoorDash stated the errors were not intentional, it confirmed that the issues affected approximately 264,000 workers, though this represented less than one percent of overall local transactions. The company reported that systemic errors meant around $6.6m in wages never reached workers, while a further $5.7m arrived days or weeks late. DoorDash said it has since patched the software bugs responsible for these failures.
