New AIM rules aim to attract UK energy firms

InvestmentEnergyBusiness1 month ago

The London Stock Exchange has introduced a revised rulebook for its Alternative Investment Market, effective from 5 August 2026, in a move designed to simplify the listing process for energy companies. The reforms are intended to reduce the complexity and cost associated with accessing public investment, thereby creating a more attractive environment for ambitious businesses seeking capital to support growth. By streamlining admission requirements and offering greater flexibility in fundraising, the exchange hopes to encourage a wider range of energy firms to list on the junior market.

The changes are particularly relevant to the energy sector, which typically requires substantial funding for project assessment, development, infrastructure construction and expansion. The new rules replace the traditional Working Capital Statement with more informative disclosures regarding an issuer’s capital resources, financial commitments and liabilities. This approach provides a clearer view of a company’s funding needs over the next 12 months and its intended use of raised funds. Additionally, issuers now have greater flexibility in the accounting standards they can use. UK-incorporated companies may prepare accounts under UK GAAP, while international issuers can utilise EU IFRS, US GAAP, Canadian GAAP, Australian GAAP or Japanese GAAP.

Further measures include the introduction of founder-friendly voting structures, which may encourage innovative clean energy and technology companies to go public while retaining strategic control. New admission routes for international firms are also expected to attract a broader range of energy companies to the UK market. Although companies must still meet established disclosure and governance standards, the overall aim is to foster a growth-oriented environment. The reforms benefit both the admission process and the period following listing, offering a more pragmatic approach to raising capital and executing mergers and acquisitions.

Currently, the energy sector represents a relatively small portion of the AIM market. As at 31 July 2026, only 69 of the 598 issuers on the exchange, or 12 per cent, were in the energy sector. This year to date, only Rift Helium Plc has joined AIM. The exchange is hoping that the new rulebook will encourage more companies in this sector to list. However, once on the market, energy issuers appear to be popular with investors. The sector accounted for 40 per cent of trades by volume in July 2026, with ITM Power and Serica Energy ranking among the top-10 traded stocks in that month.

Both ITM Power and Serica Energy have been active in recent months, adding to their respective portfolios and growing their businesses. This activity aligns with the original purpose of AIM, which was launched in 1995 to support such growth. Investors are generally looking for companies with stated growth plans that they deliver and communicate effectively. For energy companies that are ambitious and have a clear strategy, AIM now presents a more efficient option for securing investment and expanding operations.
