Medly secures £5.9m to expand AI exam preparation platform

Medly AI, an education technology company that describes itself as the developer of the world’s first artificial intelligence tutor for exam preparation, has raised $8m, equivalent to £5.9m, to expand the capabilities of its platform. The startup, which launched in February 2025, stated that it has already accumulated a user base of more than 400,000 individuals in the United Kingdom. The new funding is intended to support the growth of its automated tutoring services, which are designed to assist students in their academic preparation.

The company was founded by Dr Paul Jung and Dr Kavi Samra, both graduates of University College London’s medical programme. Medly’s platform is built on a combination of large language models and is engineered to deliver tailored services to each student. The system tracks individual progress and bases its instructional approach on the specific learning style of the user. The company reported that among students who used the platform to prepare for their GCSE examinations last summer, 74 per cent improved by at least one grade. Dr Jung, who serves as chief executive, stated that the platform aims to bridge the gap between students from families that can afford private tutoring and those who cannot. He noted that the custom AI provides access to a personal tutor available around the clock, which adapts to how each child learns and responds to their unique needs.

The seed funding round was led by Felix Capital and included backing from existing investors Eka Ventures and Ada Ventures, as well as several angel backers. Angela Chou, an investor at Felix Capital, commented on the potential of technology to create positive changes in people’s lives, particularly in education. She highlighted the potential for AI to shape life trajectories for the better, noting the low marginal cost of content creation. Chou expressed excitement about Medly’s mission to provide effective exam preparation to hundreds of thousands of young people and praised the founders for building and scaling the platform to a meaningful size in a short period of time.

This fundraise follows Medly’s selection for the Department for Education’s AI Tutoring Tools Pioneers Programme grant. The company is now joining other organisations, including Pearson and ElevenLabs, in developing tools aimed at improving academic attainment for disadvantaged pupils across England. The grant supports initiatives that use artificial intelligence to enhance educational outcomes and support students who may not have access to traditional private tutoring resources.
