Alcoa approves Wagerup gallium plant targeting up to 10% of global supply

Alcoa has approved a gallium plant at its Wagerup refinery in Western Australia that could provide up to 10% of global supply.

Alcoa has taken a final investment decision to build a gallium production facility at its Wagerup alumina refinery in Western Australia, a project the company says could supply up to 10% of global gallium demand.

Alcoa Corporation has approved construction and operation of a new gallium plant at the Wagerup refinery, with support from the Australian, Japanese and United States governments and industry partners.

Site preparation will precede construction. Gallium is a critical input for semiconductor, telecommunications and defence applications, while current global supply is highly concentrated.

The investment is strategically significant because it could establish a sizeable new source of gallium outside the dominant existing supply chain. For investors, it adds critical-minerals exposure to Alcoa’s established bauxite, alumina and aluminium portfolio and aligns the company with government-backed efforts to diversify semiconductor and defence-material supply.
