American Airlines executives stated on Thursday that the carrier’s AAdvantage loyalty programme serves as a key differentiator from rivals and a source of competitive advantage. During a third-quarter earnings call, Chief Executive Robert Isom affirmed that the company is leading in loyalty, noting that enrolments and spending on co-branded credit cards have both risen year on year. He described the programme as one of the airline’s strongest competitive advantages.

According to a press release issued on the same day, AAdvantage enrolments increased by 27.4 per cent compared with the same period last year. The airline indicated that the programme drives customer engagement, premium demand and long-term value creation. Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper reiterated that the loyalty scheme is a differentiator for the company and that it intends to maintain that status. Pieper also highlighted a new feature allowing eligible members to combine cash and miles when booking flights via the website or digital app, describing early results as encouraging.

The cash-and-miles functionality, which began rolling out on 2 October, provides customers with a slider at checkout to select a combination of payment methods and view an updated cost summary. American Airlines reported that its co-branded credit card partnership with Citi saw card spending grow by nearly 10 per cent year on year. Pieper expressed confidence in the potential for improved performance within this expanded partnership. In a financial results presentation, the company noted that the loyalty programme leads the industry, offers exclusive benefits, and that the growth in card spend demonstrates sustained engagement across its portfolio.

Pieper identified loyalty as one of four strategic priorities for American Airlines, alongside network, customer experience and premium revenue. He stated that the company has made considerable strides in these areas and has initiatives in the pipeline designed to deliver revenue performance, close the gap with peers and drive margin expansion. The airline’s leadership emphasised that these efforts are central to its broader strategy of enhancing long-term value and maintaining a distinct market position through evolving customer benefits and payment flexibility.
