Axios Partners With OpenAI To Automate Local News Coverage

Local journalism across the United States has struggled for over twenty years, facing significant challenges from digitalisation that reduced subscriptions and left many publications in a precarious state. Private equity firms subsequently acquired these outlets, converting them into digital advertising operations managed by small teams. Compounding these issues is a declining public trust in media and falling literacy rates, placing the industry at its lowest point ever. Despite this grim outlook, one company appears determined to accelerate the decline of local news through automation.

That entity is Axios, a for-profit corporation majority owned by Cox Enterprises which was established in 2016. The organisation gained prominence by delivering short, clinical bullet-point summaries rather than traditional narrative articles. Now, its founders intend to automate their already minimal editorial process using artificial intelligence to reshape local journalism further.

Jim VandeHei, co-founder of the publication, described himself as an AI lab rat following a three-year agreement with OpenAI. This deal allows thirteen local newsletters free access to content-generating tools in exchange for granting OpenAI unrestricted access to all Axios material to train ChatGPT. When questioned about perceptions surrounding his adoption of artificial intelligence technology, VandeHei stated that the organisation avoids distraction by external media opinions.

VandeHei acknowledged he is not delusional but expressed little patience for those who deny AI capabilities. The move raises concerns regarding journalistic standards given Axios frequently covers developments within the tech industry and OpenAI specifically, creating a potential conflict of interest between the two entities. VandeHei has been explicit about expectations placed on his writers during an event hosted by OpenAI.

During this panel discussion, he told staff they have no choice but to embrace artificial intelligence tools regardless of personal reservations or fears regarding their use in professional settings. The organisation prioritises adaptation over sentiment when it comes to integrating new technologies into daily reporting workflows and editorial strategies moving forward.
