Bentley introduces electric Torcal SUV in £350m UK investment

Investment1 hour ago

Bentley has unveiled the Torcal, its first fully electric vehicle, as part of a £350 million investment in its British operations. The new model, which is the most affordable in the manufacturer’s current range, is designed to secure the future of its production base in Crewe while addressing shifting consumer preferences in the luxury automotive sector. The launch represents a significant strategic pivot for the Volkswagen-owned brand, which is seeking to balance traditional heritage with modern technological requirements.

The Torcal is positioned as a sport utility vehicle with a starting price of £173,000, making it the entry point into the Bentley brand. This pricing strategy is intended to provide easier access to the marque for a broader demographic, including younger buyers who may be put off by the higher cost of bespoke, one-off vehicles that can reach £1.7 million. The vehicle is set to be manufactured at the Crewe factory, a move that directly supports the employment of the 4,000 workers based there. By anchoring production in the United Kingdom, the company aims to stabilise its local workforce while expanding its product lineup to include this fourth model, joining the Continental, Flying Spur and Bentayga.

A distinctive feature of the Torcal is its synthetic engine noise, a digital soundtrack constructed from drum recordings that mimic the characteristics of the brand’s former eight-cylinder combustion engines. Bentley’s chief executive, Frank-Steffen Walliser, explained that this audio element is designed to inject emotion into the driving experience and bridge the gap for customers accustomed to the traditional growl of an internal combustion engine. The company hopes this approach will appeal to both existing enthusiasts who are hesitant about electric vehicles and new, younger clientele attracted by the vehicle’s muscular design and relative affordability.

Despite the launch, the entry into the electric vehicle market is more cautious than previously anticipated. In 2024, Bentley abandoned plans to release a new electric car annually between 2025 and 2030, citing weak market demand. Walliser acknowledged that while early indicators suggest strong interest in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, the precise level of demand remains uncertain. He stated that there are currently no plans for a second electric model, noting the necessity for caution in long-term planning after revising strategies multiple times over the past decade. The Torcal enters a competitive landscape where rivals such as Rolls-Royce offer the Spectre coupe at approximately £330,000, and the premium segment includes the Range Rover Electric at £154,070.

The investment arrives amidst a challenging environment for the British automotive industry. It follows recent announcements from Nissan and McLaren, which have committed to substantial spending in the UK. However, the sector faces pressure from US tariffs, competition from Chinese manufacturers, and high industrial energy costs. Jaguar Land Rover has recently announced job cuts, and Volkswagen is planning to reduce its global workforce by 100,000 by 2030. Walliser indicated that Bentley’s success allows it to operate independently within the group, though he noted that suppliers, particularly smaller businesses, are feeling the strain of regulatory changes and energy prices. Bentley itself cut 245 jobs in Crewe earlier this year, and sales have declined by a third since their 2022 peak.

The Torcal offers a range of up to 375 miles on a single charge and can be charged from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes using ultra-fast charging infrastructure. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds welcomed the announcement as a sign of confidence in Britain’s automotive sector. Walliser confirmed that the investment will fund a new assembly line, although headcount in Crewe is not expected to increase due to profitability considerations.
