A powerful consortium of British industrial heavyweights has unveiled an ambitious £6.5 billion project aimed at revolutionising the UK’s hydrogen production capabilities. The initiative, dubbed Project HySpeed, brings together prominent names including British Gas owner Centrica, Johnson Matthey, and JCB scion Jo Bamford.
The groundbreaking proposal, submitted to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, outlines plans to establish one gigawatt of green hydrogen production capacity across Britain by 2030. The project’s scope extends beyond mere production, promising to generate 24,300 jobs, with a minimum of 50% based within the UK.
The consortium, which includes engineering powerhouse Arup, cement manufacturer Heidelberg, construction materials specialist Tarmac, and infrastructure provider National Gas, positions itself as a direct response to the government’s 2023 Hydrogen Production Delivery Roadmap. This strategic alignment supports ministerial ambitions to achieve ten gigawatts of low-carbon hydrogen production by decade’s end.
Project HySpeed’s economic proposition appears particularly compelling, with projected delivery costs of £5.96 per kilogram – significantly undercutting the £9.50 per kilogram strike price offered in the initial Hydrogen Allocation Round. This cost efficiency could prove crucial in securing governmental support and private sector buy-in.
Centrica Chief Executive Chris O’Shea emphasised the project’s strategic importance, stating: “There is no silver bullet to decarbonise the energy system. The scale and ambition of this project has the potential to dramatically lower costs, making hydrogen roll-out affordable for the government and private sector alike.”
Despite historical scepticism surrounding hydrogen’s practical applications and safety concerns, particularly regarding domestic heating, industry advocates maintain that building at scale represents the key to economic viability. The project’s unprecedented scope positions it to become not only Britain’s largest hydrogen initiative but also one of the most significant globally.
