Huel Acquired by Danone in €1 Billion Euro Deal

Huel, the British meal shake and food replacement brand, is set to be acquired by the French food group Danone in a deal valued at €1 billion. This transaction marks a significant financial achievement for the company’s founder, Julian Hearn, and its investors, including the actor Idris Elba.

Julian Hearn, who founded Huel in 2015 alongside nutritionist James Collier, holds approximately a 47 per cent stake in the business. This stake could potentially yield him a payout of €470 million. Highland Europe, a venture capital firm, is also a notable shareholder.

Huel has built itself into a prominent brand within the health and nutrition market, achieving a valuation of £220 million within just four years. The company offers nutritionally complete powders and liquid alternatives to traditional food, appealing to a growing demand for healthy, convenient meal options.

Diverse celebrity investors have backed Huel, including Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina, who each possess stakes of around 0.02 per cent. Other notable figures, such as presenter Jonathan Ross and entrepreneur Steven Bartlett, have also participated in funding rounds that valued Huel at over £400 million in 2022.

The acquisition aligns with Danone’s strategic goals to enhance its presence in functional nutrition and expand its portfolio within the rapidly growing complete nutrition segment. Huel’s extensive product range, which includes ready-to-drink and powdered food forms, coupled with its strong direct-to-consumer sales, positions it as a valuable addition to Danone’s offerings.

James McMaster, Huel’s chief executive, stated that addressing common nutritional deficiencies is the driving force behind Huel’s development. With Danone’s backing, there is significant potential for expanding into new markets, enhancing distribution capabilities, and advancing research and development.

Danone’s CEO, Antoine de Saint-Affrique, highlighted that Huel’s accomplishments in the complete nutrition market resonate with Danone’s mission to deliver health through food. This acquisition is part of Danone’s “Renew” initiative, aimed at revitalising growth after a period of restructuring.

Over the last year, Huel has reported revenue growth, reaching £214 million, an increase from £184.5 million the previous year. Analysts believe the acquisition is strategically sensible given Danone’s focus on health-oriented categories and its desire to capture a younger, lifestyle-focused consumer demographic.

Despite facing criticism from traditional food advocates and regulatory challenges regarding marketing practices, Huel has shown resilience. With Danone’s extensive resources and market presence, the future looks optimistic for Huel as it prepares to navigate an evolving food industry.
