China Gold International Resources has restarted open-pit mining at its Chang Shan Hao gold mine in Inner Mongolia. The site had been suspended for nearly five months following a slope instability incident. The company confirmed that its production guidance for 2026 remains unchanged despite the operational interruption.
Operations recommenced in early October after remediation works and regulatory filings were completed. The shutdown began on 22 May 2026 when a localized slope instability forced a halt to mining activities. No casualties or equipment losses were reported during the incident. Geotechnical assessments were commissioned immediately to develop a remediation plan. These works, finished by the end of September, included restoring the road system, removing loose material, reinforcing the landslide body, and installing drainage systems alongside ongoing slope monitoring. The mine met all safety standards required for normal operations once the emergency management authorities approved the restart.
The processing plant continued operating during the shutdown by utilising existing low-grade ore stockpiles. This strategy supports the company’s 2026 production target of between 70,732 and 83,592 ounces of gold. With mining now back to normal, the plan is to blend fresh ore with stockpiled material to maintain stable delivery volumes and processing grades. Safety risk control measures will also be implemented to support efficient production scheduling for the remainder of the year. The CSH mine produced 96,816 ounces of gold in 2025. The company also operates the Jiama copper-gold polymetallic mine in Tibet, which yielded 70,883 tonnes of copper and 61,218 ounces of gold last year. Shares in China Gold International rose 2.4 per cent to C$33.03 in Toronto on Tuesday, valuing the firm at C$13 billion.
