World leaders gathered in Beijing were momentarily caught off guard when Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jongun were overheard discussing the future of human longevity and the potential for immortality. The discussion, picked up on a hot mic while they observed a military parade, shed light on growing interest amongst nonWestern powers in the possibilities offered by biotechnology.

During the conversation, Xi Jinping, aged 72, remarked that living to 70 was once rare but today the age is viewed as comparatively youthful. Putin, also 72, responded that the development of advanced biotechnology could allow for continuous transplantation of human organs, allowing people to live longer and perhaps even achieve immortality. Kim Jongun, at 41 the youngest among the trio, appeared to listen intently and smiled at the prospect. The conversation was broadcast before being cut off as cameras shifted focus to Tiananmen Square.

Putin has previously shown a well documented fascination with antiageing methods and has maintained long standing ties to officials like Mikhail Kovalchuk, who are noted for their interests in scientific pathways to prolong life. Reports have suggested that Kremlin backed scientists in Russia have been directed to explore 3D bioprinting techniques, aiming to grow replacement organs using laboratory methods to support lengthier lifespans.

China remains the subject of controversy over its extensive organ transplant programme, with evidence that organs from executed prisoners have supplied hospitals across the country. Nevertheless, both Russia and China appear eager to accelerate research and application of organ replacement and genetic interventions for longevity, with this aspiration appearing to bridge their political and scientific alliances.

Putin later confirmed to journalists that he and Xi had indeed discussed human longevity during the parade. He argued that modern medical technologies and innovative surgical practices present new prospects for extending active life well beyond current expectations, citing the late Silvio Berlusconi’s well publicised interest in these topics as further evidence of international fascination.

The leaders had congregated to mark eighty years since China’s victory over Japan in the Second World War, with the military parade showcasing the latest advancements in robotics and weaponry as a signal to Western powers. This display of unity between Xi, Putin, and Kim highlighted not only shifting global alliances but also a shared vision of breakthroughs in biotechnology as a foundation for future geopolitical strength.
