EMP Metals Advances Lithium Production with Saskatchewan Plant Completion

Saskatchewan-based lithium brine developer EMP Metals has completed construction on its demonstration facility at the Viewfield project, marking a significant progression toward commercial production for one of the province’s leading technological players. The Project Aurora Demonstration plant is now directly linked to both production and waste brine disposal wells, achieving an integrated level rarely seen among Canadian lithium brine projects according to company reports released Wednesday.

Viewfield sits approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Regina. Karl Kottmeier, chief executive officer of EMP Metals, stated in a release that finishing construction represents a major milestone as the firm transitions from building infrastructure to operational phases. Fresh production brine is currently flowing through processing systems while integration continues. With commissioning roughly halfway finished, the company maintains its schedule for starting operations during the third quarter.

This development arrives as lithium prices recover following a two-year downturn that severely impacted sector investment. Western governments have begun supporting domestic supply chains after concerns regarding China’s dominance in battery mineral markets led to grants and stockpiling initiatives. While Arizona Lithium secured approval last year for its Prairie site, becoming the first Canadian brine project approved for production, EMP has reached one of the final technical milestones before commercial development begins.

Other notable brine operators on the Prairies include E3 Lithium in Saskatchewan and Volt Lithium in neighbouring Alberta. On Wednesday morning, EMP shares rose five per cent to 51 cents each in Toronto trading, resulting in a market capitalisation of C$63.3 million. The stock has traded between 26 cents and C$1.03 over the past twelve months.

Resource updates from one year ago indicate that Viewfield and Mansur sites host 931,038 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent grading 141 milligrams per litre, alongside inferred resources totaling 1.11 million tonnes at 112 milligrams per litre. Mansur lies about forty kilometres northwest of Viewfield.

Preliminary economic assessments from 2023 suggest Viewfield could produce 12,175 tonnes annually over twenty-three years with a post-tax net present value approaching one billion dollars and an internal rate of return of 45 per cent. Capital costs are estimated at C$571 million including contingencies.

The demonstration facility processes ten cubic metres daily from the wellhead, aiming eventually to build a commercial plant producing over three thousand tonnes annually. Its purpose involves validating process performance and providing engineering data for future development.
