Cross-Channel train services are set to become more affordable to operate under a new proposal aimed at enhancing international rail travel from the United Kingdom. London St Pancras Highspeed (LSPH), which manages the railways and stations connecting the capital to the Channel Tunnel, has announced plans to significantly reduce charges for operators planning new routes.
Currently, Eurostar is the sole operator providing direct train services between the UK and Europe, with regular trains reaching only Paris and Brussels. Engineering work is causing temporary disruptions to the Amsterdam route until May. LSPH has stated that the railway track between St Pancras International and the Channel Tunnel is operating at only 50% of its potential, indicating ample opportunity for new services.
The incentive scheme, which will come into effect by the end of May, is designed to lower costs for any additional international services. Operators planning new routes or reinstating previous stops, such as Kent’s Ebbsfleet and Ashford, will reap significant financial benefits. LSPH’s chief executive, Robert Sinclair, described the proposal as a groundbreaking step intended to foster expansion within the international rail network.
With an eye on sustainability, Sinclair highlighted that high-speed rail travel could reduce carbon emissions by up to 96% compared to flying. The scheme will see track access charges for the initial year of new services being cut by as much as 50%. Operators can expect reductions of around £2,000 on the existing fee of £7,600 for using the stretch of track from London to Folkestone.
There appears to be a growing potential for various domestic and international operators to enter the market. Eurostar has already indicated a warm reception to any initiatives that promote more sustainable travel. Plans are also in place to improve facilities at St Pancras and the Temple Mills depot to accommodate an increase in services.
