Isar Aerospace achieves first commercial orbital launch from Europe

Isar Aerospace has successfully launched the first commercial rocket to reach orbit from continental Europe, marking a significant milestone for the region’s space ambitions. The uncrewed Spectrum rocket lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway on Saturday, carrying five small satellites and an in-flight technology experiment. This achievement represents a breakthrough for a region where several nations are seeking to secure independent access to space and establish a foothold in the fast-growing satellite launch market.

Daniel Metzler, co-founder and chief executive of Isar Aerospace, described launch capability as the current biggest bottleneck in the industry. The company stated it would rapidly expand satellite deployments following the successful mission. Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, hailed the event in a statement as the beginning of a new era. Merz had previously visited the launch site in March, underscoring Europe’s efforts to establish greater autonomy as the global order shifts under the administration of US president Donald Trump. Andrius Kubilius, the EU defence and space commissioner, also noted on social media that Europe’s independent access to space had received a major boost.

This was Isar’s second launch attempt, coming 18 months after its first rocket plunged into the sea and exploded shortly after takeoff from the same site. The company has confirmed that five more rockets are currently in production. Isar is now focused on scaling up operations to meet rising demand, with a long-term goal of conducting approximately 40 launches per year. The German firm is also developing a second launch site in Nova Scotia, eastern Canada. Global competitors in this sector include Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which launches from the United States, and the French firm ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and Safran that operates from a spaceport in French Guiana.
