Iraq is seeking major US investment in oil, gas and power infrastructure, with Chevron, ExxonMobil, HKN Energy and GE Vernova linked to projects.

Iraq’s new prime minister is seeking major US investment in oil, gas and power infrastructure during a White House visit, with Chevron, ExxonMobil, HKN Energy and General Electric among the companies linked to projects.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is using his 13–18 July visit to Washington to promote a broad energy-investment programme after the Iran war damaged crude production and state finances. The initiative includes negotiations with Chevron over major upstream assets, support for US-backed LNG and power projects, improved security assurances for operators in Kurdistan and revived export-pipeline plans linking Iraq to Mediterranean markets.

Iraq has already approved an agreement with HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield and authorised its Electricity Ministry to finalise a wider cooperation agreement with General Electric covering generation and transmission infrastructure. Reuters also reported that Chevron, ExxonMobil and other US operators are in discussions over Iraqi energy opportunities.

Why it matters

The initiative signals a potentially important shift in Iraq’s investment policy towards US companies after years in which Chinese, Russian and European groups held a dominant role. Successful deals could unlock upstream capacity, improve export resilience and create opportunities across oilfield services, LNG, pipelines and power infrastructure.

For investors, the most material listed exposure is Chevron and ExxonMobil, while the broader policy shift could affect competition for international oil companies and service providers active in the Middle East. Execution risks remain substantial because Iraq is still constrained by OPEC+ production limits, regulatory complexity and regional security threats.

Companies and tickers: Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX); Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM); GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV). HKN Energy is privately held.

Sector: Oil & Gas / Energy Infrastructure.
