
Nuclear power stations across Europe are being forced to reduce output or shut down as record-breaking heatwaves drive river levels to historic lows. The severe drought is compromising the ability of facilities to draw sufficient water for cooling reactors, creating a significant challenge for an energy sector often promoted as a clean alternative to fossil fuels. While receding waters have allowed archaeologists to uncover ancient ruins, the situation has caused major operational difficulties for engineers managing the continent’s atomic power infrastructure.
In Hungary, the Paks nuclear plant, which accounts for nearly half of the nation’s electricity supply, faced the prospect of a complete shutdown due to critically low water flow from the Danube River. To mitigate the risk, the Hungarian government has mobilised engineers to place approximately 145,000 cubic metres of rocks into the riverbed. This intervention aims to slow the current and conserve water upstream, ensuring that the facility can maintain adequate cooling for its reactors. The measures highlight the vulnerability of large-scale energy production to extreme weather events.
Similar pressures are being felt in Romania, where the state-owned nuclear operator may be compelled to close its final remaining reactor. In an earlier attempt to secure cooling water, the Romanian navy detonated 180 kilograms of explosives to redirect flow from the Danube. Meanwhile, France has seen a twenty per cent reduction in nuclear energy production caused by a combination of extreme drought and recurring jellyfish invasions that clog intake filters. Although France’s more diversified energy grid has prevented a crisis as severe as those in Hungary or Romania, the disruptions underscore broader systemic risks. With another heatwave forecast, these operational constraints may represent only the initial phase of longer-term challenges for European nuclear energy generation.
