Jamie Oliver to relaunch Jamies Italian restaurant chain after six year hiatus

Jamie Oliver is set to revive his collapsed Italian restaurant chain, signalling a return to the UK high street after a six year absence. The celebrity chef, whose Italian-themed eateries fell into administration in 2019, will relaunch the Jamies Italian brand through a franchise partnership with Brava Hospitality Group, the owner of Prezzo. The first reopening is scheduled for Leicester Square in London this coming February. If the site performs strongly, Oliver plans to extend the rollout, aiming for four new venues per year.

The relaunch unfolds amid distinct economic challenges which Oliver calls the most hostile trading environment the hospitality sector has ever faced. Surging food inflation, persistent high utility costs, labour shortages and cautious consumer behaviour have complicated prospects for all operators. Consumers are dining out less often and paying closer attention to price and value. Nevertheless, Oliver maintains that the broader market is ready for revitalisation, insisting there is demand for fresh, reasonably priced food and a strong children’s menu. He states that eating out should remain a treat, but one delivering both value and a commitment to high welfare sourcing.

Jamie’s Italian originally launched in 2008, quickly expanding to 42 locations at its zenith. However, the brand’s growth masked deeper financial and operational failures, including costly property acquisitions and inconsistency in the delivery of its offering. The company’s collapse in 2019 led to 22 restaurant closures and the loss of approximately 1,000 jobs. Oliver retrospectively described the initial business model as fundamentally flawed; he admitted oversight in key areas such as profit margins and cost control, and that he had ceded excessive authority in the early years.

Recent economic pressures have further reshaped the competitive landscape. High street chains have had to cope with mounting food costs and additional regulatory demands, with Brexit cited as one driver behind rising prices. Despite these headwinds, the Jamies Italian brand continued to operate at international locations unaffected by the UK administration.

For this relaunch, Oliver will maintain tighter control over the operation, including menu development, sourcing, and overall restaurant presentation. The franchise model has been adopted, transferring much of the operational risk and financial burden to Brava Hospitality Group. The intent is to lay stronger foundations than in the original venture. Oliver emphasises his commitment to oversight and discipline in this renewed effort.

The move has been welcomed by some within the sector. New openings are regarded as positive indicators for British high streets, which continue to struggle with footfall and financial viability. The Jamies Italian relaunch will be closely watched as a litmus test for mid market dining resilience amid ongoing economic headwinds.
