The world’s largest sovereign wealth fund has attracted an eclectic mix of 82 applicants vying for its chief executive position, offering an annual salary of £500,000. Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, valued at NKr20 trillion (£1.4 trillion), has received applications from an array of candidates, including the current chief executive, economics professors, a well-known comedian, and surprisingly, 18 teenagers.

The recruitment drive comes as Nicolai Tangen’s first five-year term approaches its conclusion. Notable applicants include former finance minister Erlend Grimstad, Greenpeace Norway head Frode Pleym, and Jacob Bjorheim, a 65-year-old economics professor with previous experience at the Bank of International Settlements.

The candidate pool’s diversity is remarkable, with ages ranging from 16 to 65 years, averaging 29 years old. Only one woman has applied for the position, highlighting ongoing gender disparity in top financial roles. Norwegian comedian Markus Vangen’s application has raised eyebrows in financial circles.

Under Tangen’s leadership, the fund reported a record-breaking profit of NKr2.5 trillion (£178 billion) in 2024, surpassing its 2023 performance. The fund’s success was largely attributed to strong performance in American technology stocks, with its portfolio spanning over 11,000 investments across 70 countries.

The fund maintains a diversified investment strategy with 71.4 per cent in equities, 26.6 per cent in fixed-income instruments, and smaller allocations to real estate and renewable energy infrastructure. Its UK investments, valued at approximately NKr1.1 trillion, include prestigious properties such as the Meadowhall Shopping Centre and stakes in traditional establishments like the Leicester Arms.

A central bank panel will assess candidates, aiming to fill the position by September. Industry experts suggest Tangen is likely to secure reappointment, given his successful tenure and popularity, despite past controversies including a notable disagreement with Elon Musk over executive compensation.
