OpenAI betting on AI agents becoming mainstream in 2025

OpenAI believes that AI-powered assistants, such as those from Google and Apple, will “hit mainstream” next year, as technology groups race to bring AI agents to consumers.

AI agents that can complete complex tasks and reason for humans have emerged as the new front of the tech industry’s battle to maximize revenue from this rapidly developing technology.

Kevin Weil is the chief product officer of OpenAI. He said: “We want it to be possible to interact with and AI as you would with a human being.”

He added, “These more intelligent systems will become possible. I believe 2025 will be the year when agentic systems finally reach the mainstream.”

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it would be increasing access to the new model series o1, with improved reasoning and GPT-4o voice capabilities. Developers can access this technology live, in which the AI will understand voice commands in real-time and converse with them in a scenario similar to a phone call.

OpenAI’s plans to restructure into a company , which is a for-profit organization , include bringing AI agents to the mass market.

Fast-growing startup wants to close a $6.5bn round of funding this week, at a valuation of $150bn. It will do so by convincing investors that it can beat its competitors to key technological milestones and to dominate the sector. Microsoft, Nvidia and SoftBank, as well as venture capital firms Thrive and Tiger Global have been in discussions with the company over the past few weeks.

Microsoft, Workday and Salesforce placed agents at the center of their AI plans last month , while Google and Meta also said that this would be their focus when they put their AI models in their products.

The AI assistants that are in use today have been around for almost a decade. However, the latest advancements allow for more natural and smoother voice interactions as well as superior levels of understanding. This is thanks to large language models.

OpenAI released its “assistants API” last year to allow developers to create agents using the technology. The company claimed that this was due to the limitations of older models.

Weil stated that OpenAI’s improved models will manifest themselves in ChatGPT and other products built using its API. It also said this would be true for developers and start-ups who use its API to build their products. The company refused to comment on its immediate plans to create an AI agent.

In a demonstration of the tool, an AI was used to source local products such as strawberries. The AI system would call the business and place an order for strawberries based on the user’s instructions.

OpenAI stated that any use of this technology could not conceal the fact it is AI and not a human. It was also only available for developers as six presets rather than creating new voices.

Weil said, “If we do this right, we can spend more time doing the things that really matter in life and less time staring into our phones.”
