>A British company that has successfully conducted 7,000 repairs on water leaks without costly excavations is poised to tackle mains pipes next. Origin Tech, known for its innovative non-disruptive leak detection and repair technology called Find and Fix, has applied for a new patent for addressing mains leakages. The company anticipates fast-track approval for the patent due to its significant potential benefits for the environment.
The core of Origin Tech’s system relies on two proprietary technologies. Firstly, Origin Orbit employs artificial intelligence-driven analytics and satellite scanning to pinpoint leaks within a 30-metre area. Secondly, the No Dig technology seals leaks by injecting a non-toxic solution into the water network through the pipe, thereby forming a plug. This advanced method expedites the leak repair process, making it up to ten times faster and considerably cheaper than traditional trench-digging methods.
Notably, this technology extends the lifespan of infrastructure, as it addresses leaks before they escalate into pipe failures. Martin Jackson, the information services director at Northumbrian Water, commented that Origin’s technology transforms leak detection and repair, allowing for swift responses and reduced disruption, which ultimately protects water supplies and delivers advantages for customers and the environment.
The newly patented mains trenchless repair solution facilitates the rapid sealing of leaks in larger pipes up to eight inches in diameter, eliminating the need for full excavation. Currently, three billion litres of water are leaked daily across the network, a volume equivalent to 1,202 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
John Marsden, director and founder of Origin Tech, stated that securing this patent represents a major milestone not only for the company but also for the future of water infrastructure in the UK. The achievement of repairing mains leaks without excavation puts an end to an aspiration that the industry has had for decades, while significantly cutting time, cost, and disruption.
Origin Tech has seen remarkable growth since 2022, recording an increase in turnover from £4.9 million in 2024 to £8.5 million in the latest financial year, marking a rise of 75 percent.
