The Philippines is positioning itself as the primary location for a global geologic hydrogen revolution, reportedly possessing the largest natural hydrogen seeps on Earth. These underground reservoirs suggest that vast volumes of hydrogen are stored beneath the surface and await exploitation. If this nation successfully becomes the world’s first test case for a commercially viable operation in this sector, it could fundamentally alter its economy and energy security while disrupting global markets and broader decarbonization efforts.

Hydrogen has long been viewed as a solution to decarbonizing difficult sectors such as steelmaking and shipping because it can be combusted at high temperatures similar to coal or heavy fuel oil but produces only water vapor. However, the environmental benefit depends entirely on production methods. Green hydrogen generated using clean energy currently struggles economically against gray hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. Furthermore, utilizing clean energy specifically for hydrogen production is often less effective for climate goals than directing that energy elsewhere.

Geologic hydrogen offers a potential solution by sourcing natural hydrogen directly from the Earth rather than producing it artificially. Although the technology remains in its infancy, experts believe it is feasible and could be executed at very low cost. The United States Department of Energy estimates production costs could fall below one dollar per kilogram. This figure represents significant savings compared to current green hydrogen prices ranging between three dollars fifty cents and six dollars per kilogram. Such pricing would make natural hydrogen cheaper than fossil fuel-based variants, potentially reversing the economic balance between gray and green production and opening new pathways toward net-zero emissions.

Recent instability in energy supplies from the Strait of Hormuz has reignited global interest in clean hydrogen supply chains following a decline in hype surrounding the technology over recent years. Leaders in China, Europe, and the United States have announced measures to revitalise research into clean hydrogen. In response to these developments, various startups are seeking suitable locations for testing theories regarding natural deposits.

Koloma, a leading firm backed by investors including Bill Gates and Amazon, has identified the Philippines as an ideal site for exploration. The company’s chief executive noted that the nation hosts the largest natural hydrogen seeps on the planet and believes these sites connect to very large accumulations. If successful, the project would transform the clean energy industry globally while aiding the Philippine economy during a pivotal period of development.

The Philippines faces significant challenges from oil price volatility driven by conflict in Iran but remains Asia’s fastest-growing nation with rapidly modernising infrastructure. Currently, much incremental power generation relies on burning diesel or importing expensive liquefied natural gas. Hydrogen that competes directly with these costs would offer a viable alternative. However, commercial application is still years away because the science required to extract hydrogen from such deposits is not yet ready for widespread use.

Representatives from Koloma state that confirming production volumes will take several more years. The company’s chief executive warned against rushing into drilling without proper preparation, noting that premature action would harm shareholders and the industry. While the firm has brought over ninety percent of potential hydrogen gas to the surface and verified large accumulations through testing, they emphasise that a fully commercial resource is not yet available.
