
The United States Department of Energy has awarded 73 million dollars in funding to four projects under its Mine of the Future initiative. The Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation selected these recipients to establish domestic testing grounds for innovative mining technologies. The primary objective is to accelerate the commercialisation of new methods, upgrade domestic mining capabilities, and secure critical minerals supply chains.
US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated that investing in moving cutting-edge technologies from laboratories to the field will help unleash the nation’s vast mineral resources. Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson added that these investments demonstrate how American innovation can redefine modern mining. She noted that establishing world-class testing grounds will accelerate breakthroughs that strengthen supply chains, the workforce, and national competitiveness.
The Advanced Mining and Mineral Processing Technologies Office selected four distinct institutions for the funding. Innovative Wireless Technologies, headquartered in Lynchburg, will operate project locations in Julian and Blacksburg, West Virginia, and Idaho Springs, Colorado. This project aims to create a national testbed to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced mining technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and supply chain resilience. The effort will combine underground and surface mining environments to validate next-generation digital, connectivity, and automation solutions in real-world conditions.
The University of Arizona was also selected for its project location in Sahuarita. This site will create a nationally accessible underground testbed to speed up the development and deployment of advanced mining, electrification, and energy management technologies. Additionally, Curators of the University of Missouri, based in Rolla, will create a multifunctional mining technology proving ground. This facility will combine two complementary sites for underground technology testing and advanced comminution research, supporting innovation, real-world validation, and workforce development.
Southern Methodist University, headquartered in Dallas, will operate a project in Navasota, Texas. The institution plans to create the world’s first synthetic mine within an advanced drilling and sensing test facility. By repurposing a highly instrumented Texas drilling site, the project will enable rigorous, repeatable, and safe testing of mining tools, workflows, and automation systems. The department stated that these projects will develop mining proving grounds and support research and development to accelerate the progression of technologies from laboratories to field-scale settings, an essential step to de-risk commercial adoption. A separate Mesa operation provides US companies with a domestic destination for magnet-bearing products that would otherwise be exported as waste.
