Inflation in the United States accelerated to an annual rate of 3.7 per cent in September, marking the highest level since the spring and presenting a significant challenge for the Republican party ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Data released on Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that price increases rose from 3.4 per cent in August, signalling a renewed upward trend in consumer costs. This final inflation report before voters head to the polls arrives at a time of widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration, particularly regarding the cost of living.
The surge in prices is largely attributed to the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, which has driven energy costs to record levels. Gasoline prices accounted for more than half of the overall increase, rising by 34 per cent compared to the previous year. According to data from AAA, average gas prices remain more than a dollar per gallon higher than last year. Fuel oil, used for heating homes, saw a 74 per cent year-on-year increase, a concerning development for households preparing for the winter season. Air travel fares also climbed by 22.4 per cent, impacting those relying on flights during the holiday period. Diesel prices, which are critical for domestic supply chains, reached a record high last month.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, also increased by 0.3 per cent in September to reach 2.6 per cent annually. Overall consumer prices rose by 0.6 per cent from August. The economic impact of these price hikes is substantial, with Brown University estimating that higher energy costs have added more than 1,020 dollars to the expenses of the average American household. In total, US consumers have borne an additional cost of 133 billion dollars. This financial strain has eroded household budgets, making the economy a primary concern for voters.
Political sentiment reflects this economic anxiety, with a recent Reuters/Ipsos survey finding that 78 per cent of Americans blame the current administration’s policies for inflation that is outpacing earnings. This criticism extends within the Republican party itself, as 57 per cent of Trump supporters hold the same view. President Trump has attempted to deflect responsibility by pointing to the Iranian government as the primary cause of the economic squeeze. He recently accused Yemen’s Houthi group of attacking Saudi Arabia to deliberately drive up oil prices ahead of the elections, describing the actions as nasty and purposeful. However, the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the latest data.
The persistent inflation is expected to place additional pressure on the Federal Reserve to maintain or increase interest rates to cool the economy. The central bank raised rates last month for the first time since 2023, citing elevated prices. Higher interest rates increase the cost of borrowing, with the 30-year mortgage rate, commonly used for home ownership, rising to 7.40 per cent. Richard Carter, head of fixed interest research at Quilter Cheviot, noted that the inflation figures were higher than expected, dealing a blow to the president’s efforts to demonstrate control over prices and create conditions for rate cuts. He suggested that previous measures, such as allowing Russian diesel back into the market, have proven insufficient as the Middle East conflict continues to impact the global economy.
