US Navy Ensures Protection for Gulf Shipping Amid Shipping Crisis

President Trump has announced that the United States will provide insurance and guarantees to shipping passing through the Gulf, with naval escorts if necessary. This decision comes as the shipping industry grapples with rising insurance premiums triggered by increased risks in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for global energy supplies.

The intervention follows a significant escalation in insurance costs affecting operators navigating the region. The Joint War Committee, composed of underwriters from Lloyd’s of London, has classified numerous ports and waters in the Middle East as higher risk territories. Analysts indicate that this has already restricted tanker and container traffic in the area, raising concerns about potential impacts on global energy prices and supply chains.

About 200 international tankers find themselves effectively stranded, waiting for clarification on the evolving situation. As a result of heightened tensions, ships perceived to have ties to the United States or its allies now face premiums that are three times higher than those for vessels without such associations.

The situation has prompted fears that a prolonged blockade could lead to significant disruptions in energy supplies, exacerbating inflationary pressures. Oil prices surged approximately eight per cent, which marks the highest levels seen since July 2024. The shipping industry recalls parallels to historical crises, such as the tanker war of the 1980s when Iran and Iraq targeted merchant vessels along vital trade routes.

Insurance cover for war risks is expected to remain a contentious issue, with market participants watching closely for indications of Iran’s capabilities and intentions regarding maritime security. The growth of marine insurance premiums highlights the alarming dynamics currently at play in the region.

Government and industry leaders have expressed urgency in addressing the lack of reliable information circulating among operators. Ensuring the safety of crews and the continuity of maritime trade remains a top priority as stakeholders navigate these turbulent conditions.
