Viking South gas field approved as carbon storage blueprint

A former gas field in the Southern North Sea off the Humber coast has been identified as a model for reducing industrial emissions through carbon capture and storage. A study led by the University of Aberdeen concluded that the Viking South site is geologically suitable for holding captured carbon. This designation positions the project as a key component in the UK’s strategy to manage emissions from heavy industry in the region.

The research estimates that the site has the capacity to store up to 88 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This volume places it among the most significant individual storage locations in the United Kingdom. The analysis drew on extensive seismic, well, core and production data to demonstrate that the site meets all fundamental criteria for safe and effective storage. The study noted that the rock formations which previously trapped natural gas securely over centuries and decades of production are now capable of permanently holding carbon dioxide.

The Humber-based Viking CCS project has already received track two status in the UK government’s carbon storage programme, recognising it as a priority. Planning consent has been granted for the essential onshore pipeline, with Harbour Energy leading the development. The project has secured 65.5 million pounds in government investment to support its progression. This financial backing underscores the strategic importance of the infrastructure in facilitating the energy transition.

Professor John Underhill, director of energy transition at the University of Aberdeen’s Interdisciplinary Institute, highlighted the site’s proven operational history. He noted that unlike many other proposed locations, Viking South does not rely on assumptions. Originally known as the Victor Field, it produced natural gas safely for more than 30 years before ceasing operations in 2016. During its productive life, the field delivered over one trillion cubic feet of natural gas from its Permian Leman Sandstone reservoir without significant water ingress, loss of containment or integrity failures.

The Humber region is responsible for approximately 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Access to carbon capture and storage is therefore vital for supporting the area’s core industries. The study proposes that Viking South is uniquely positioned to serve the Immingham industrial cluster by offering a short and efficient transport route from onshore infrastructure to offshore storage. Professor Underhill added that the project supports the supply chain, retains jobs and builds regional skills. Graeme Davies, Harbour Energy’s executive vice president for carbon capture and storage, stated that the site demonstrates how existing infrastructure and subsurface knowledge can support the UK’s energy transition effectively and cost-efficiently.
